Vanpooling is an excellent alternative to driving alone. Drivers and passengers follow a route and schedule they decide upon together. The time they spend riding to work instead of driving to work can be used in many productive ways. No worries about traffic... no worries about vehicle reliability... no worries about getting to work on time.

The Sacramento TMA will help you start vanpooling

  • Join an existing vanpool as a passenger.  Check out our Available Vanpool Seats page

  • Find answers to Frequently Asked Questions about vanpooling. Enterprise Rideshare and VPSI answer your questions

  • Start a new vanpool with your own van or a leased van.  Both Enterprise and VPSI lease vans, providing insurance, roadside maintenance and help filling seats, call Enterprise Rideshare (916) 480-4961 or visit VPSI's website

  • Recruit new passengers or back-up drivers.  Call 511 or visit www.sacregion511rideshare.org

  • And don't forget the Emergency Ride Home program - you're never stranded at work without a car.

Affordability
Most vanpoolers find they save money by sharing a ride. They avoid wear and tear on their own cars, save on gasoline and maintenance, and in many cases avoid the high cost of public parking in urban areas.
Safety
Vanpool drivers pick up and drop off passengers at their door or convenient park-and-ride locations. VPSI provides drivers with advice on defensive driving and other procedures to ensure safe commuting.
Commuter Checks
An easy way to encourage to vanpool, a provision of the Comprehensive National Energy Policy Act of 1992 allows employers to offer a tax-free fringe benefit to employees who vanpool to work. Under federal law, the first $65 provided to an employee each month for vanpooling purposes is not considered taxable income.  CommuterChecks can be provided by an employer to employees as a reward or incentive.

The Federal Transit Administration's National Transit Database shows the number of vanpools increased 77% between 1996 and 1999 (latest year of available data), from 2,039 to 3,601 vehicles.  The number of passenger miles from these vanpool programs increased 52% between 1996 and 1999.  The number of transit agencies reporting vanpool statistics grew from 27 to 40 systems.
